Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for a naturally occurring siliceous rock. The distinguishing feature, which sets it apart from other volcanic glasses, is that when heated in our high tech furnaces to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from 4 to 20 times its original volume, much like a kernel of popcorn.

The material becomes very light weight and is capable of holding many times its weight in water. It is chemically inert making it an ideal soil augmentation product as well as an ideal sterile starting compound for seedlings.

Additionally, due to its remarkable ability to retain fluids, it has a wide market as a filtering material.

It is fire resistant and has excellent insulating properties.

Normiska currently purchases and imports perlite from Greece.

Additional information on perlite is available at The Perlite Institute.
